Poem Without Birds

Yes, there is a blue sky above,
beneath which

the diviners

look up. Oncology
of clouds,

disgust

in the wind, twigs
and wrappers

waiting, waiting.

A student sleeps in the grass
as a squirrel absconds
one by one with her peanut M&Ms.

So many ways to avoid the central fact.

At bus stops, lacing boots,
beneath spotless statues,

the posing

above which we find ourselves
looking down

for proof the clouds have passed.

-Philip Pardi

Sparrow - Sparrow tries to be kind to this compost pile. He lives in Phoenicia, N.Y. Abraham and Princeton Diary are two of his recent books.

Sleep Standing Up

I’ve seen you sleep standing up.
I know you sleep standing up.
I seen you snooze while you stand in your shoes;
I know you can sleep standing up.

Teach me to sleep while I stand;
there aren’t many people who can.
I want to doze without curling my toes.
Please teach me to sleep standing up.

Everybody should sleep standing up.
Everyone should sleep standing up.
You get more respect if you sleep while erect;
Everybody should sleep standing up.

-Sparrow
