Steve in Beit Sahour (Palestine, 2001)
Steve, up early, would sip cool coke along-
side his hosts, listening to the distance.
What a thing it is to fear, said someone.
(Pausing now in the telling, Steve surveys
the speed and shift around us, his city reduced
to those who will not hear.) Their son, he spoke
to me just once, Steve tells me: He was young,
he saw in me just another American
in his country for ten days, knew in no time
I’d be back here in need of coffee to get
me out the door. Tell them, said the son
when I was leaving, and his father’s eyes
went wide, surprised to hear his boy speak up,
Tell them I don’t throw stones, I throw rocks.
