Leon Treadway Enters Heaven
I watched in the War my beloved
Giant journeyman
outfielder no one knows today,
Leon (Red) Treadway, explode
from first on a swat into a Polo Grounds gap,
round third in an arc so wide I feared
at 8 for his run that would knot the game.
When his slide eluded the Nazi's lunge
at the plate I felt nothing, ever, again, might get me.
Lean Thadford Treadway, b. 1920 in Athalone, Georgia
played for the Giants in 1944-45, attaining a lifetime
batting average of .266. Over 138 games, he hit 9 doubles;
4 triples and 4 home i~uns, batting in 28 runs.
He stole 5 bases and not once, mind you;
was caught stealing. He died in 1994 in Atlanta.
