I'm Beginning Again
I'm beginning again to inhabit the life of
my child as she lived; within,
to begin, the particular puff
in her cheek, entering that puff
and the drowse of her breath
without a ticket now, dissolving into the subway
rumble of her laughter
expressing to its jaunty halt,
modeling the embodiment of that voice,
becoming her conversation,
most particularly with me, on her return,
her elbow resting on the doorway
jamb of her room I thought
to sit in to grieve.
